The dream team behind the gorgeous WT Urban Kitchen thought it was time for a new adventure and decided, after a year of service, to give restaurant ‘Fico’ a mini make-over. Restaurant Fico is still a beautiful oasis with warm wood, green walls and pink velvet chairs. On the menu you will find beautiful and tasteful dishes. We were invited to taste the menu at the new Fico 2.0, and of course we accepted.
On a cold Friday evening we bike to the restaurant, from a distance, we see the warm light of the restaurant shining. By the entrance, there’s a short and steep climb to the top. Once we’ve arrived on the first floor, we notice that the atmosphere is already good: the wine is flowing richly and beautiful dishes are ready to be served.
We were happy to see that there weren’t any major changes in the interior. Where WT Urban Kitchen is mostly minimalistic, Fico has chosen an Italian style. Dark but warm wood forms the interior canvas, with as a special twist a wonderful deep green jungle tapestry and hanging lamps for atmospheric lighting. The soft pink velvet chairs bring a seductive and feminine touch to the dark interior.
The previous menu at Fico was mainly inspired by Italian cooking. On the current menu you will find a wide range of dishes that represent the world, with sometimes a classical twist. The menu changes weekly so there is always a surprise. You can chose between a four-, five- or six-course menu. Do you want meat, fish or vegetarian? There’s something for everyone. Finish off with a treat from the Candy Bar. A table stacked with delicious sweets so enjoy, you will be blow away.
Enjoying six courses at Fico
We take our seats, and pretty soon two amuse-bouches and tasty bread with porchini butter appear. Every morning the restaurant freshly bakes the bread to serve in the evening. Then a delicious spumante is poured. The cheeseball tastes just how it should. It has that bite! Then another appetizer is served: roasted celeriac, smoked trout, macadamia nut, beurre blanc with thyme and sauerkraut and fresh mint. Real comfort food!
After the three delicious amuses a parade of beautiful and tasty dishes followed. All dishes are simple and soft in taste. One of the dishes is presented by the chef and finished at the table with a sauce from a copper pan. How lovely! Of all the dishes, my favorite was the sweetbread with red onion in Cabernet Sauvignon, beetroot, walnuts and gravy de veau. The meat was light in its taste and butter soft with the crisp of the red onion and the earthy flavor of beetroot.
The cherry on the cake were the two desserts of the evening. The dessert of fresh meringue-mixes of yoghurt, textures of cucumber and a homemade sour mat, gives your taste buds a real kick.
Unfortunately we didn’t end the evening with treats from the Candy Bar. We were so spoiled all evening that we couldn’t eat anything else. The wonderful evening at Fico was complete and after a while of chatting we got on our bikes to home with a smile on our faces.
