Discover the Utrecht Library

Ontdek de nieuwe Bibliotheek Utrecht

The time has almost come: on 13 March the new Utrecht Library will open. The old post office on the Neude has been thoroughly renovated in recent years and the results are promising! Come and discover the new library with us.

From post office to library

The imposing building on the Neude was built in 1924 and was a post office until 2011. The building was not used for years. The library moved from the Oudegracht to Neude. Next to the library, there are also shops and restaurants.

Utrecht art at the library

Contemporary art will also have a place in the new library. Works of art by five prominent Utrecht artists will be on display.

The visitor can view the impressive three-dimensional stained glass work of five by five meters by Jop Vissers Vorstenbosch from three points. From the front you can see the areas of color clearly, from the side the painting blurs and from the back, the work resembles a traditional stained-glass window. Whatever perspective you look at the work of art from, it always has a totally different look.

Artist Frank Halmans regularly works with architecture and living as a theme. Especially for the youth department, he designed a bookcase in the shape of a house more than four meters high. The walls consist entirely of bookshelves with hanging books.

There is much more to see and experience in the new library. There will be a special opening program from 13 to 29 March. From 14 March there will also be free guided tours of the library for three weeks. For more information visit the website of the Utrecht Library.
