We all know that the city of Utrecht has a lot to offer, but there is also a lot to discover in the province! After previous visits to Woerden and Oudewater, it is time to visit the centre of Montfoort, where we will dine at De Heeren van Montfoort.
Wandering through Montfoort
Arrived by bus from the center of Utrecht, I wander through the city center and past the Castle of Montfoort. On the way to the restaurant I meet only five inhabitants, it is a quiet Wednesday evening in Montfoort. It’s also logical that most people are inside where its nice and warm, because the weather is not very pleasant.
After a 10 minute walk, I arrive at De Heeren van Montfoort and I am pleasantly surprised. What a beautiful restaurant with a luxurious interior. There is a lovely fireplace and above it beautiful wine bottles are exhibited. The host welcomes me warmly and accompanies me to a table next to the fireplace. I can’t remember the last time I sat next to a fireplace. It’s nice to warm up from the short but cold walk.
The French-Dutch cuisine
At De Heeren van Montfoort, the menu is inspired by French-Dutch cuisine. The menu is not extensive but offers plenty of choice. The wine list, on the other hand, can cause choice stress. The friendly service is happy to help you make the right choice.
Because I participate in the ‘Week without Meat’ campaign, I choose two vegetarian dishes from the menu: beetroot salad as a starter and risotto as the main course. Of course, I also take a look at the rest of the menu and see that there is plenty dishes for meat and fish lovers. The sea bass with polenta, glasswort, lobster gravy and grilled vegetables sounds very tasty. As well as the calf’s cheek stewed in wine gravy.
Back to my vegetarian choices. The beetroot salad is beautifully plated and pure in taste because no dominant dressing has been poured over the salad. The dish revolves around the flavors of chioggia and yellow beet. Risotto is one of my favorite dishes, if it’s on the menu the choice is easily made. The risotto with lime lies on a bed of delicious bundle fungus on which Parmesan cheese and rocket have been sprinkled. The smooth risotto tastes delicious in combination with the sweet mushroom. The atmosphere in the restaurant is homely and the crackling of the fireplace makes this evening Montfoort extra special.
In addition to the beautiful restaurant, De Heeren van Montfoort also has a garden where guests can sit comfortably to enjoy the first rays of sunshine. There are also several rooms for private dining or festive occasions.
Inspired to discover the culinary province of Utrecht? Then add De Heeren van Montfoort, next to Bistronoom (Woerden) and Restaurant Hex (Oudewater), to the list.
