Discovering the province of Utrecht has brought us many beautiful things. We have learned a lot about the history of the places we have visited so far. And in the culinary field we are quite surprised. Earlier you could read about the beautiful new restaurant HEX in Oudewater. In this blog I take you to Woerden, for dinner at Bistronoom.
Bistronoom winner Gouden Pollepel 2017
Restaurant Bistronoom has won the Gouden Pollepel by the Algemeen Dagblad in 2017. This was a milestone for the owners: Jan Cees and Kirsten. Because the restaurant was only open for four months. The award was a confirmation for the young entrepreneurs that they were on the right track with their concept.
Surprising wine tasting
We start our day in Woerden with rain and a cold Dutch breeze. This is compensated when we are warmly welcomed for an autumn tasting in the basement of Bistronoom. Sommelier Danny takes you on a journey through the wine list. He tells enthusiastically about his chosen wines. White and red, suitable for the season and the dishes served in the restaurant. Do not be afraid, you do not have to be an experienced taster, he takes you step by step in his story. How can you view a wine, how can you taste it? What can you smell or taste? Danny loves exciting, not everyday wines. A crackling Godello from Bierzo. Soft, minerally Gruner Veltliner. Wines from Moldova, Bulgaria and Portugal. Every glass was surprising.
Exceptional combinations
At Bistronoom there is a relaxed atmosphere. The interior of the restaurant is warm with beautiful blue couches and an urban jungle on the wall. After a quick look at the menu, we immediately notice that the flavor combinations are special. We decide to be surprised and gave the menu back to the waitress.
The sommelier pours the first glass of wine. On the table sits an appetizer of goat cheese, potato and vadouvan bacon and a mini stone grill with beef tenderloin. The put us to work but we do not mind, because now the evening starts in Woerden.
Be surprised by beautiful dishes in a relaxed atmosphere
The starter is a colorful dish of tuna, pearls of soy orange, watermelon and flower petals from the own vegetable garden. A delicious dish full of fresh flavors! On the table sits bread, made from what is left from the beer making process, and waldkorn from the local baker. The chef uses many local products for the dishes. Woerden is the capital of the Green Heart and therefore there is no shortage of ingredients. The herbs and edible flowers come directly from the restaurants’ own vegetable garden.
A light pasta, made from dumpling dough, filled with salmon and Parmesan cheese is then presented to the table. The pasta was light, making the flavors of the salmon and Parmesan cheese jump out. This was followed by a long cooked piece of veal with sliced beans, mashed potatoes and tarragon sauce.
The evening ended with a chocolate surprise: a chocolate ball filled with matcha and caramel ice cream and white chocolate crumble. Hot rooibos tea was poured over the chocolate ball. Delicious!
