City restaurant KANTIEN, housed in the old canteen of the municipality of Utrecht, is one of the well-hidden gems of Utrecht. The route to KANTIEN, a 20-minute bike ride from the city centre, is definitely worthwhile. Not only because of all the beauty that lies on the route such as; Molen de Ster, The Munt Building and the lovely houseboats. But certainly also because of the new menu, which we were invited over to taste.

Pure dishes full of taste

The spacious restaurant has an open kitchen as a showpiece. Nice to see the dynamics that takes place in the kitchen from your table. If you want to recover from your bike ride before dinner, you can relax in one of the vintage furnished corners. Order a beer or a good glass of wine and start the evening in a relaxed atmosphere.

The new menu is not much different from the previous concept. KANTIEN still cooks responsibly with products from Dutch local heroes and on the menu are many local delicacies. At the basis of the dishes on the new menu are: sweet, salt and pepper. Vegetables play the leading role and meat and fish are more side dishes.

The new menu at KANTIEN is now 66.7% vegetarian. But if you are a meat or fish lover, don’t be put off by this high percentage. Because on the menu are two delicious dishes that I definitely would recommend to order. The roast of the Blonde Aquitaine beef from the Utrecht district. The green sauce served with the beef is delicious. I wish I took home a jar of this stuff. And the fried flatfish, which we had ordered at the last moment, was definitely worth the wait. The butter soft fish with a crispy crust was the winner of the evening. KANTIEN offers a lot more then only dinner. But to find out you really have to jump on your bike for a ride to Utrecht West. KANTIEN is open for lunch, brunch, dinner and drinks.

Summer terrace

Extra tip for the summer: you can chill on the mega-size terrace of Kantien. Escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and relax in the sun. You can enjoy a good selection of beers and organic wines with matching bites. A cheerful summer is guaranteed. So now you know where to go when the first summer sunrays appear.
