I’ve gotten very into matcha lattes lately. The obsession started purely because they’re delicious, but matcha’s also said to be super healthy – so what’s not to like?
Matcha powder comes from the same plant as green tea. The difference is that to make matcha, the plants are kept covered, which apparently forces them to work harder to stay green – and this in turn makes those leaves even healthier than regular green tea. Some of the most important benefits are that it contains high levels of antioxidants, and it provides a more sustained boost of energy than your typical coffee crash & burn.
But all that being said, it’s the taste of matcha lattes that I love. Craving one? Here are six places in Utrecht where you can get your fix!
SLA
The matcha latte at SLA is my personal favourite. It’s vibrantly green and has that strong bitter edge that makes you feel like you’re drinking something good for you but still delicious. If you’re more about the matcha than the latte, then this is the one for you! Plus you’ll get a feeling of serenity purely from sitting in this chill spot, with loads of plants and wooden accents.

Onz (gesloten)
Nestled in the heart of Wittevrouwen, Onz is a super cosy, home-y, living room inspired café – the perfect place to hang out on chilly or rainy days. They serve a deliciously creamy & indulgent matcha latte that’s like a warm hug in a mug 😉

Anne & Max
Anne & Max recently started serving matcha latte. In fact, the change is so recent that you can’t actually see it on the menu yet… but fret not, ask for it and it shall be yours! It’s yummy on its own, or the perfect accompaniment to one of their many delicious breakfast and lunch options.

Rocking Chair
We love Rocking Chair for a cozy drink with a friend, some work, or a good book. This is the place to head to for a creamier matcha latte that feels just that touch more indulgent and comforting. And if you’re hungry, check out their menu: besides sweet treats, it also boasts lunch items with Vietnamese influences!

Bagels & Beans
The Bagels & Beans matcha latte is probably the sweetest one on this list, but that slight bitterness of the matcha still comes through (a matcha latte is never really a super sweet drink). My favourite order is a simple avocado bagel and my trusty matcha latte… It’s a matcha made in heaven!

Starbucks
Maybe it’s because I’m North American, but for me there’s something super comforting and home-y about walking into any Starbucks. I just love it. And good news: their matcha latte is delicious! As a bonus, in the fall and winter if you take it to go you’ll get it in a super festive cup 😉
